example for show size 42/43, Hot Socks 4 ply
Gauge
At first please knit a gauge to ensure the measurements of the pattern will match. Compare your gauge with the one stated on the instruction and change needle size if necessary, so that the measurements (cm), rows, usage of stitches and material will correspond to your knitting.
Cuff and leg
Cast on the appropriate number of stitches (see table: 63 st) for the desired size, and distribute them evenly onto 4 needles (16 stitches per needle). Work in rounds, and the beginning of the round is the middle at the back of the sock.
Cuff pattern: knit 1, purl 1 or knit 2, purl 2, alternate.
Leg: knit stitches. Knit approx. 20 cm overall.
Heel with 2 versions
A) Heel with short rows
The heel is knitted over the stitches of the 1st and the 4th needle (32 stitches), in rows and in stocking stitch.
1st row: Knit all stitches, turn.
2nd row: Work the first stitch as a double stitch: Putt he yarn in front of the piece, stitch into the stitches from the right, then slip the stitch with the yarn and pull the yarn back tight, so that the stitch is then as a double stitch on the needle. Now purl the remaining stitches, turn.
3rd row: Work the first stitch as a double stitch, knit the remaining stitches to the double stitch, turn (the double stitches are not knitted).
4th row: Work the first stitch as a double stitch, purl the remaining stitches to the double stitch, turn.
Always repeat rows 3 and 4, until the first and the last stitch of the third in the middle, the heel stitches are worked as double stitches (on both sides 12 double stitches each, in the middle 8 single stitches). Now work 2 rounds over the stitches of all 4 needles, knitting the double stitches together, as one stitch.
In the 2nd round knit until the end of the 3rd needle. Then knit in rows over the 1st and the 4th needle (32 stitches).
1st row: Knit the stitches of the third on the side (see table: 11 stitches), and the stitches of the third of the heel stitches in the middle (see table: 10 stitches), turn.
2nd row: Work 1 stitch as double stitch, purl the remaining stitches up to and including the last stitch of the third in the middle, turn.
3rd row: Work one stitch as a double stitch, knit all the stitches up to the double stitch, knit the latter as one stitch, then knit the following stitches of the third on the side, turn.
4th row: Work first stitch as a double stitch, purl all the stitches up to the double stitch, purl the latter as one stitch, then purl the following stitches of the third on the side, turn.
Always repeat rows 3 and 4, until all stitches of the third on the side are knitted.
Then continue working in rounds until the start of the toe.
B) Heel with cap and godet
Knit the heel flap over the stitches of the 4th and 1st needle (32 stitches) in rows in stocking stitch (right-side row knitwise, wrong-side row purlwise). For that purpose, take the stitches on one needle, and always knit the 2nd and 3rd stitch, as well as the stitch last but two and the stitch last but one (= ribs). The stitches of the 2nd and 3rd needle are not being worked. Please refer to the table for the number of rows required (30 rows). After that, the stitches are split up into 3 parts for the heel cap (see table). In our example, 11 outer stitches and 10 stitches each in the middle for the cap. In the next right-side row, knit the 11 outer stitches and 9 cap stitches. * Slip the last cap stitch as if to knit, knit the 1st stitch of the left outer part, pass the slipped cap stitch over and turn. Now slip the 1st cap stitch as if to purl (yarn before the stitch), and purl all stitches except for the last cap stitch. Now purl this last stitch together with the following stitch of the outer part and turn. Now slip the 1st cap stitch as if to knit, and knit all cap stitches up to the last stitch. Always repeat after * until all stitches of the side are used up, and only the cap stitches are left (10 stitches). Now continue knitting in rounds, the beginning of a round is in the middle of the cap stitches.
1st needle: pick up half of the cap stitches (5 stitches) + given number of stitches (see table: 16 stitches) from the side edge of the heel.
2nd + 3rd needle: knit stitches.
4th needle: Pick up the given number of stitches from the side edge of the heel (16 stitches) + 2nd half of the cap stitches. After that, work the godet as follows: There are now more stitches on the 1st and 4th needle than on the 2nd and 3rd needle. These additional stitches are now bound off again for the godet. For that purpose, knit the stitch last but two and the stitch last but one together in the 3rd round on the 1st needle, knit the last stitch. On the 4th needle, knit the 1st stitch, slip the 2nd stitch knitwise, knit the third stitch, and pass the slip stitch over.
Repeat this decreasing in every 3rd round, until there is the same number of stitches on all four needles.
Foot and standard toe
Start the standard toe after the length of the foot given in the table. For that, knit together the stitch last but two and the stitch last but one on needles 1 and 3, and on needles 2 and 4 knit the 1st stitch, slip the 2nd stitch as if to knit, knit the 3rd stitch and pass the slip stitch over. Repeat the decreasing according to the table. Pull the remaining stitches together with a double thread and sew it up.
