Stitch Pattern:
Garter St.: k all sts in all RS and WS rows.
Stockinette St: RS rows: k all sts and in WS rows: p all sts.
Selvedge St: sl 1st st k-wise at beg of row and k last st in each row.
Increases (RS): selvedge st, k2, M1tbl
Decreases (RS): selvedge st, k2, skp (sl 1 k-wise, knit 1, psso)
Tension: 12 sts and 23 rows to 10 cm meas. over pattern using size 8mm needles or size needed to achieve given tension.
Instructions:
The shawl is worked from side to side.
Starting at the side point cast on 3 sts and work in garter st.
Row 1: (WS): k all sts. (garter st)
Row 2-3: k all sts. (garter st)
Row 4 (RS): selvedge st, M1tbl, k to end.
Work this inc every 4th row 3 times more. = 7 sts.
Row 17 (WS): sl 1st st k-wise (selvedge st), k2, p1, k2, k1(selvedge st).
The first and last 3 sts create the edges of the shawl. The the centre part of the shawl is made of stockinette sts and is shaped through inc and then dec.
Row 18 (RS): sl 1st st k-wise (selvedge st), k2 (garter st edging), k1 (centre panel), k2 (garter st edging), k1(selvedge st).
Row 19: work as row 17
Row 20: selvedge st, k 2, M1tbl, k to end = 8 sts.
Row 21: selvedge st, k 2, p to last 3 sts, k3.
Row 22: selvedge st, k to end.
Row 23: work as row 21
Repeat rows 20-23 six times more. Then rep row 20 once more. =15 sts.
Row 49 (WS): selvedge st, k 2, k to end.
Row 50 (RS): selvedge st, k 2, * k 2 tog, 1 yfwd, rep from * to last 4 sts then end row with k 3, selvedge st.
Row 51: selvedge st, k 2, k to end.
Rows 52 - 64: between the first and last 3 sts (selvedge st + 2 sts in garter st patt) work in stockinette st. making incs in the 52nd, 56th, 60th and 64th rows on the right hand edge (M1 tbl as in row 20). = 19 sts.
Rep rows 49 - 64 eight times more = 51 sts (192 rows)
Then work rows 49 - 57 once more = 201 rows and 53 sts (approx. 85 cm in height).
Now the centre of the shawl has been reached.
Cont in established patt making decs in every 4th row (first inc. in the 203rd row (row 60 in patt and 2nd in patt row 64) on the right hand edge in place of the incs. (in RS rows: selvedge st, k 2, skp, k to end).
Repeat rows 49 - 64 nine times more making the decs in rows 52, 56, 60 and 64. = 15 sts (row 352)
Then work rows 49 - 51 once more.
Next row (RS): selvedge st, 2 sts garter st, skp, work in stockinette st to end of row then 1 selvedge st.
Next row (WS): selvedge st, work in stockinette st to end of row then 2 sts garter st and 1 selvedge st.
Next row: selvedge st, 2 sts garter st, work in stockinette st to end of row then 1 selvedge st.
Next row: selvedge st, work in stockinette st to end of row then 2 sts garter st and 1 selvedge st.
Rep these 4 rows until only 1 stockinette st remains (= 7 sts total).
End shawl in garter st patt making decs in every 4th row after the selvedge sts k 2 tog. until 3 sts total rem.
Next row: cast off rem. 3 sts even in patt..
Making Up:
Weave in ends. Make three tassels and attach to each corner of the shawl. For each 13-14cm long tassel cut 22 pieces of yarn 30 cm in length and finish according to pictorial instructions.
