Instructions:
For the bottom of the bag, cast on 40 S and 2 ES in Cl. 01 and knt. 20 cm (= 32 R) plain right, then co. the S straight, knt. the S as they occur. For the wall of the backpack, pick up the S in Cl. 02 from the edges of the bag floor as follows: start with one long side at the marking (see sketch) and pickup up every 42nd S from the long edge and every 18th S from the short edge of the bottom rectangle (= 120 S). Mark the 1st S of each Rd respectively as the start of the round. Now, kn. plain right in Rd. initially 5 cm (= 8 Rd.) in Cl. 02, then end the backpack wall in Cl. 21. First kn. 44 cm (= 70 Rd.) plain right. In the following Rd. for the holes to pull through the cord, co. S 9, + 10, 33 + 34, 45 + 46, 57 + 58, 69 + 70, 93 + 94, 105 + 106 and 117 + 118 and cast on every 2nd S again over the cast off S in the following round, continue knt. plain right between the cast off S. Knt. another 3 cm (= 5 Rd.) in seed stitch, continuing with the seed stitch. Now knt. the saddle in Cl. 02 in seed stitch. For this, pick up a total of 36 S from the cast-off edge of the backpack wall over the 4th - 39th S and knt. 35.5 cm (= 64 R). For the curvatures in the 46th R, co. 1 S on each side, rpt. these drops another 1 x in the following 4 R and 2 x in each 2nd R (= 28 S). Then co another 2 x 2 S and 1 x 3 S in each 2nd R. co. the remaining 14 S straight, continuing the seed stitch. For the carry handle, cast on 4 S plus 2 ES in Cl. 02 and knt. 40 R in the seed stitch, then co. the S straight, continuing with the seed stitch. For each of the two carry handles, cast on 6 S plus 2 ES in Cl. 21 and knt. 81 cm (= 162 R) in the seed stitch, then co. the S straight, continuing with the seed stitch. For the cord to pull the backpack closed, cast on 180 S in Cl. 02 and immediately co. again in the following row, knt. the S. For a button, knt. a knob as follows: cast on 10 S plus 2 ES in Cl. 21 and knt. 15 R plain right in RSR and BR, then co. the S straight. Pull together the edge of the developed rectangle with the working thread and loosely fill the rectangle with felt wool.
Completion:
Use felt wool for all seams: Sew on the carry handle and carry straps (see sketch). Sew on the button after felting the bag saddle (see image), ideally using sewing thread and a sharp needle for this purpose. For a fastener, sew a pushbutton on the back of the bag saddle and to the backpack wall. Also only pull the cord through the holes after felting.
Felting:
Felt the backpack, the button and the cord (alone) in the washing machine at 40°C. To do this, select the colours wash program (2 hrs.) with 800-1000 revolutions when spinning, no economy or short wash program. Add some detergent without optical brighteners or built-in softener. Do not use softener. To support the felting process, add 3 tennis balls to the washing machine. After felting, bring the backpack into shape immediately and let it dry. Tip: For forming, pull the still damp backpack over a suitably sized box or wooden block. If the carry straps are too short, these can be pulled to the correct length while they are still damp.
